Welcome to the Rising Voices Wiki - the password to edit this wiki is 'outreach'

As the internet becomes more accessible to more people, as computers become cheaper, and as software applications move from the desktop to the web, the so-called digital divide seems to be narrowing. In its place, however, we see a participation gap in which the vast majority of blogs, podcasts, and online video are being produced in middle-class neighborhoods in major cities around the world. Rising Voices aims to help bring new voices from new communities and speaking new languages to the conversational web, by providing resources and funding to local groups reaching out to underrepresented communities.

We do this in three different ways:

1.) Microgrants

Thanks to the support of the Knight Foundation, we are able to give $1,000 - $5,000 microgrants to outreach projects that teach the skills of citizen media to new users. In July of 2007 we announced our first round of grantees. You can learn more about their projects by clicking on the links on the sidebar to the right. Rising Voices will be awarding more microgrants in September and December of 2007.

2.) Outreach Curriculum

In collaboration with Tactical Technology Collective we are in the process of developing a series of multilingual videos and tutorials which explain how to use tools like weblogs, photo-sharing sites, podcasts, wikis, and online video. This outreach guide is very much a work in progress and we appreciate your input. You can look at and comment on a draft outline of the guide. If you would like to help write and produce the tutorials, please write to outreach@globalvoicesonline.org.

3.) Networking

Rising Voices is also a network of people who are knowledgeable and passionate about citizen media and want to see the benefits of self-expression extended to communities that have yet to come across these tools. If you would like to get involved in our community, please introduce yourself, join our mailing list and our Facebook group.
